Treasure Cay Beach

Treasure Cay is not a cay at all but a peninsula on Great Abaco, and its beach is a crescent running about five kilometres in an almost perfect arc, with sand fine enough to squeak and shallow water that stays waist-deep for a long way out. It appears regularly on lists of the world's best beaches and it deserves the place: the curve is wide, the water is calm because the bay faces into sheltered water, and outside the winter season there is often almost nobody on it. A marina and a residential development sit behind, and the ferry to Green Turtle Cay leaves from the same peninsula.

When to go

December to May is the dry high season. Summer is hot and humid with hurricane risk from June to November. Weekdays are quiet. The beach is at its emptiest early in the morning.

Good to know

Hurricane Dorian devastated the Treasure Cay development in 2019 and much of the resort infrastructure behind the beach has not reopened, so services are limited and the area feels partly abandoned; the beach itself is unaffected. There is little shade and no lifeguard. Sargassum washes up at times.
