Miraflor Nature Reserve

Miraflor is unusual in that it is a protected area whose land is owned and farmed by the people who live in it: smallholders growing coffee, vegetables and cattle across three altitude zones from dry forest up to cloud forest at around 1,400 metres. Conservation and farming are managed together through a cooperative, and visitors stay in family houses arranged by the same organisation, which is the point of coming. The upper zone holds cloud forest with orchids, quetzals and howler monkeys, and there are waterfalls, a lagoon and horse riding. It is a slow, low-key place: walking between farms, helping with coffee if the season fits, and eating with the household.

When to go

December to April for dry paths; quetzals are most visible from March to June in the breeding season. Coffee harvest runs roughly December to February. The rains from May make the tracks difficult.

Practical notes

Homestays are simple: shared facilities, outdoor latrines in places, and basic food. Spanish is essentially necessary since English is rare. Transport between the zones is by pickup or on foot and can be slow. This is farmland, not wilderness, and expectations should match.
