Tisey-Estanzuela Nature Reserve

Tisey covers pine and oak highland south of Estelí, cooler and greener than the valley below, and it holds two things people come for. The Salto Estanzuela is a waterfall of around thirty metres dropping into a pool in a wooded gorge, reached by a walk down from the road and swimmable when the flow allows. Elsewhere in the reserve, a farmer named Alberto Gutiérrez spent decades carving animals, faces and scenes into the rock outcrops of his land, a folk sculpture site now shown to visitors. Viewpoints along the escarpment look out over the plain toward the volcanoes on a clear day. A simple ecolodge and farm stays provide accommodation, and goat cheese is made locally.

When to go

December to April for the trails; the waterfall is strongest at the end of the rains around November and December and drops considerably by April. Mornings are clearest for the viewpoints.

Honest expectations

The path down to the waterfall is steep and slippery. Flow is much reduced late in the dry season. The rock carvings are folk art and modest in scale. Facilities are minimal and transport from Estelí is by taxi or a long walk.
