Mount Panie

New Caledonia's highest point, Mount Panie, rises to 1,629 metres directly above the northeast coast. The climb starts on the coconut shore and passes through belts of vegetation - endemic palms, tree ferns and, near the top, stands of the Panie kauri (Agathis montana), a tree found only on this massif - into moss-covered cloud forest. The mountain is customary land of the Kanak clans and is climbed with local guides, with a refuge partway; when the summit is clear it looks over the reef, the lagoon and the Pacific.

When to go

September to November balances drier trails against the cloud that owns the summit most afternoons - dawn pushes from the refuge give the view its best odds. Cyclone season closes the mountain to sense.

Good to know

This is a guided, custom-arranged climb - independent ascents disrespect both safety and protocol; organise through Hienghene's operators with lead time. The trail is steep, humid and slick, the refuge basic, and the summit view a weather lottery worth entering twice. Leeches are common in the wet months.
