Koumac Caves
Limestone caves in the far north, lit and open to visitors with a short guided route.

A block of limestone near Koumac in the far north is cut through with caves, and one of them has been opened with steps and lighting for a guided visit of around an hour, passing chambers with stalactites, flowstone and a colony of bats. Archaeological material has been found in the system. The dry country outside is very different from the wet east coast, and the caves are one of the few developed sites in the far north.

When to go
April to November is the dry season and the easiest for access. Guided visits run at set times. The caves stay cool year round.

Visits are guided only and run to a schedule. The lit section is short and an hour covers it. The far north is a long drive from anywhere.
