Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan is one of the most iconic and photographed sights on the Adriatic, a tiny, fortified former fishing village of terracotta-roofed stone houses crowded onto a small rocky island, linked to the mainland only by a narrow sandy causeway. Once a humble village, it was transformed in the twentieth century into an exclusive luxury resort that has hosted royalty and film stars, and while the island itself is now private, its perfect, jewel-like silhouette against the blue sea is unforgettable from the shore.

History

The earliest record of Sveti Stefan is as the capital of the Paštrovići community, which became a Venetian protectorate in 1423. The fortified island first held twelve families and by the 1800s a village of about 400 people; on the shore, Villa Miločer was built in 1934-1936 as the summer residence of Queen Marija, and both became part of the resort that opened in 2008-2009 (Wikipedia, Sveti Stefan).

May to June and September to October for pleasant weather and the best light without the peak summer crowds; the classic view is from the road and viewpoints above, beautiful in the warm light of morning or late afternoon.

The island itself is a private, exclusive resort, so it is generally closed to non-guests, and even the connecting beaches are often reserved and charged; for most visitors it is a sight to admire and photograph from the shore and viewpoints rather than to enter. The resort's operations have varied, so its status can change. The iconic view, however, is free and unforgettable.
