Getting thereAbove Lake Skadar near Virpazar; narrow road up from the lake
EntryFree; tastings charged

Godinje sits on a slope above Lake Skadar, a village of stone houses built so close together that they share walls and are connected by internal passages, a defensive arrangement that let the inhabitants move between houses without going outside. The Crnojević family had a summer residence here. The slopes around are planted with vranac and krstač vines, and several households run cellars offering tastings of their own wine and rakija.

What you actually see

  • The linked houses - stone buildings sharing walls with internal connecting passages.
  • The wine cellars - household cellars offering tastings of vranac and krstac.
  • The vineyards - terraced planting on the slopes above the lake.
  • The lake view - Skadar spread out below the village.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. Harvest in September and October is the liveliest. Summer is very hot on these slopes.

Honest expectations

Much of the old village is in poor repair and some houses are collapsing. Cellar visits are best arranged in advance. The road up is narrow with limited parking.

Nearby

Virpazar is north, and Lake Skadar is below.
