Bukumirsko jezero sits at around seventeen hundred metres below Mount Žijovo in the Kuči highlands northeast of Podgorica, a small glacial lake in a bowl of pasture and scree. It takes its name from the Bukumiri, a medieval tribe of the region, and local tradition holds that they were defeated in a battle beside it. Katuns stand on the surrounding meadows in summer and the lake is a walking and camping spot.

When to go
June to September; the road is snowbound for much of the rest of the year. July and August are the reliable window. Nights are cold at altitude.
Honest expectations
The road up from Podgorica is long, rough and needs a high-clearance vehicle. There are no facilities at the lake. Weather at this altitude changes fast.
