Kapetanovo jezero lies at around seventeen hundred metres on the Lukavica plateau below the Sinjajevina range, a glacial lake in a rock bowl said to be among the deepest in the country, with the cliff of Kapa Moračka rising directly above it. The plateau around it is summer pasture, dotted with katuns where herders bring cattle up for the season and make cheese and kajmak sold from the huts.

What you actually see

  • The lake - deep glacial water in a rock bowl at around seventeen hundred metres.
  • Kapa Moracka - the cliff rising directly above the northern shore.
  • The katuns - summer herding huts on the plateau selling cheese and kajmak.
  • The Lukavica plateau - open high pasture with karst sinkholes.

When to go

June to September; snow closes the track for the rest of the year. July and August are when the katuns are occupied. Nights at this altitude are cold.

Honest expectations

The track in is rough and requires a proper four-wheel drive; ordinary cars should not attempt it. There are no facilities at the lake beyond the katuns. Weather changes quickly on the plateau.

Nearby

Bukumirsko Lake is southeast, and Niksic is west.
