Nevidio Canyon

Nevidio means unseen, and the name is literal: the Komarnica canyon narrows in places to a couple of metres between walls a hundred metres high, so that from above the river is invisible, and it was not traversed by anyone until a team from Nikšić did it in 1965. It is now descended as a canyoning route with wetsuits, ropes and jumps into pools, taking three to four hours, and it can only be done with licensed guides.

What you actually see

• The narrows - walls closing to a couple of metres with the sky a slot overhead.
• The pools and jumps - the descent involving swims, slides and jumps.
• The 1965 first descent - the canyon not traversed by anyone until then.
• The Komarnica - the river that cut the slot through the limestone.

When to go

July to September only; water levels outside that window make it impassable and dangerous. Trips must be booked and guides are compulsory. Even in season heavy rain closes it.

Honest expectations

This is a serious canyoning route with jumps, swims and cold water, not a walk; a reasonable level of fitness and confidence in water is required. Guides are legally compulsory and going alone is prohibited. The canyon has killed people who ignored that.
