Tara River Canyon

The Tara has cut a gorge through the Durmitor massif that reaches around 1,300 metres deep, the deepest river canyon in Europe and often billed locally as second only to the Grand Canyon, though canyons in Asia and the Americas run deeper. It lies within the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park, and the water is startlingly clear and cold, running green over white limestone between forested walls. Rafting is the classic way in, with half-day and full-day runs through rapids that are exciting rather than terrifying for most of the season. Above the gorge, the Durdevica Tara bridge arcs across the void, a 1940s concrete span with a story from the war and a zipline strung beside it.

When to go

Rafting runs roughly from May to early October; the water is highest and fastest in May and June from snowmelt, gentler and warmer by August. Winter closes the rafting operations entirely, though the bridge and viewpoints stay accessible when roads are clear.

Honest expectations

The water is genuinely cold even in August - wetsuits are provided and needed. Many operators run the easier lower section from Brstanovica, which involves a long drive to the put-in; the more scenic upper stretch takes a full day. Standards vary, so check safety equipment and guide ratios. The bridge zipline is short and touristy compared with the rafting.
