Kolasin

Kolašin sits at around a thousand metres in a basin between the Bjelasica and Sinjajevina ranges, and it works as the northern mountain base: two ski areas above the town operate in winter, and in summer it is the access point for Biogradska Gora, the Tara and the Moraca canyon. The town itself is modest, largely rebuilt, with a small ethnographic museum and a growing set of hotels serving both seasons.

Background

The town counted 2,418 residents in the 2023 census and is the centre of Kolašin Municipality, home to 9,949 people. It also serves as the informal centre of the Morača region, which takes its name from the Morača River. The settlement dates from the 17th century. Along with Bjelasica and Sinjajevina, the Komovi mountains draw hikers in summer, when August highs average 25.9 °C, while January lows average -5.1 °C. Lisnati sir and smočani kačamak originally come from Kolašin. In 2023 the town hosted the MOSI Games, which brought around 2,000 athletes.

The ski areas are small by alpine standards and snow is not guaranteed. The town has little historic character, having been largely rebuilt. Accommodation prices rise sharply in both seasons.
