Naslavcea is the northernmost settlement in Moldova, on the Dniester at the point where the country ends, hemmed in between the river and limestone cliffs that rise steeply behind the houses. A hydroelectric dam upstream has changed the river here. The cliffs above the village carry rock outcrops and caves, and the position, at the top of the country with the river bending away, is what people come for. The dam upstream at Novodnestrovsk releases cold water from depth, which has changed the river temperature here and with it what lives in it.

What you actually see

  • The northernmost point - the last village before Moldova ends.
  • The limestone cliffs - the rock rising steeply behind the houses.
  • The Dniester - the river bending past the village.
  • The clifftop views - the outlook over the river valley from above.

When to go

April to October is the pleasant season. Winter is cold and the cliff paths are unsafe. Autumn colour is good along the valley.

Honest expectations

There is nothing set up for visitors and facilities are minimal. Cliff paths are unmarked and steep. The village is a long drive from Chișinău.

Nearby

Otaci is southeast, and Călărășeuca is south.
