Getting thereAt Rudi in northern Moldova near the Dniester; road access
EntryFree; donations welcome

Rudi sits in a wooded gorge running down to the Dniester in Moldova's far north, a small monastery founded in 1777 whose Trinity church is built in a compact Moldavian style with a trefoil plan. The surrounding gorge is a protected landscape with springs, limestone outcrops and the remains of much older settlement. One of the Struve Geodetic Arc survey points, part of a UNESCO-listed chain of stations, stands on the ridge nearby.

What you actually see

  • The Trinity church - the 1777 building in compact Moldavian style.
  • The gorge - the wooded valley running down to the Dniester.
  • The springs and outcrops - the limestone landscape around the monastery.
  • The Struve point - the survey station on the ridge, part of the UNESCO-listed chain.

When to go

April to October is the pleasant season with the gorge in leaf. Winter is cold and access is harder. Feast days bring visitors.

Honest expectations

The Struve survey point is a marker on the ridge, not at the monastery, and is unremarkable to look at. Facilities are minimal. The road in is rough in places.

Nearby

Soroca is south, and Naslavcea is northwest.
