Tzararacua

The same river that begins in Uruapan's city park spends itself spectacularly a few kilometres downstream. At Tzararacua - Purepecha for "sieve" or "strainer," after the way the water combs over the rock - the Cupatitzio gathers into a single curtain and drops roughly 25 metres into a deep green pool ringed by rainforest walls. Getting there is the ritual: from the car park, about five hundred stone steps switchback down through banana and coffee plantings to the river, and horses wait at the top and bottom for anyone who prefers to spend the climb differently. At the bottom, a suspension bridge crosses to viewpoints, the pool takes swimmers when the flow is moderate, and rope swings and rock ledges keep the local teenagers occupied. A rougher trail continues twenty minutes upstream to Tzararacuita, a smaller sister fall with calmer pools and a fraction of the visitors. Palapa stands sell mangoes with chile and cold drinks for the ascent, which everyone underestimates on the way down.

When to go

November to May for clear water and swimmable pools; the rainy season makes the fall thunderous and the pool unsafe. Mornings avoid both heat and weekend crowds.

Honest expectations

The climb back is a genuine workout in humid heat - horses are a fair investment. Rocks near the pool are slick, and currents strengthen after rain; heed local advice about swimming. Facilities are basic.
