Punta Laguna

Punta Laguna is conservation the community way. The Maya village of the same name protects its forest and lagoon as the Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh reserve - "house of the monkey and the puma" - and its semi-evergreen woods hold one of the peninsula's healthiest populations of Yucatan spider monkeys, studied here by primatologists for decades, along with howler troops whose dawn roars carry kilometres. Visits run with village guides, and the difference shows: they read the canopy by sound and habit, walking the trails to where the troops are feeding that morning - long black limbs cartwheeling overhead, infants clinging, howlers glowering from the crowns - with sightings near-daily in the early hours. The trail passes a small unrestored Maya temple wrapped in roots before reaching the lagoon, where crocodiles cruise and canoes cross to the far shore; a zip line spans the water for the adrenaline minute, and a cave altar continues the village's ceremonial life. It is the ethical wildlife stop of the Riviera's hinterland - small fees, local guides, wild animals on their own terms.
