Isla Holbox

Holbox is the Caribbean coast's exhale: a long, low island off Yucatan's northern tip inside the Yum Balam nature reserve, where the streets are sand, cars are absent and golf carts hum between mural-painted hotels. The water is shallow for extraordinary distances - at low tide you can walk the sandbanks toward Punta Mosquito while flamingos stalk the flats - and hammocks are strung directly over the sea. The island's headline act runs June to September, when whale sharks gather offshore in some of the world's most reliable numbers to feed on plankton blooms, with strictly regulated swimming alongside them; July and August are peak. On dark summer nights the shallows return the favour with bioluminescence, glowing pale blue around every footstep and paddle stroke. It is a place of long days, small boats and no monuments whatsoever - the point is the pace.

When to go

November to May is dry and breezy; June to September trades some rain and heat for whale sharks and the strongest bioluminescence. Peak whale-shark odds run July to August.

Honest expectations

Mosquitos are ferocious after rain and the sand streets flood into lagoons - pack repellent and accept wet feet. Bring cash, as ATMs are few and temperamental. Whale-shark trips are long, choppy and not cheap, with firm rules - small groups in the water, no touching - that are exactly as they should be.
