The Island of Djerba

Djerba, a sun-drenched island off the south coast of Tunisia linked to the mainland by an ancient Roman causeway, is the country's main beach-holiday destination, but with a gentle character all its own. History

Djerba, the largest island of North Africa, has been suggested as the island of the lotus-eaters where Odysseus landed, and in antiquity it was known as Meninx. Tunisia sought World Heritage status for it, citing its long and unusual history of settlement, and in 2023 the island became a World Heritage Site (Wikipedia, Djerba).

When to go

April to October for the warmest beach weather, with the peak in summer; spring and autumn are pleasant and quieter. The island is milder in winter than the interior, but the sea is cool.

It is primarily a package beach-resort destination, so the coast is developed with all-inclusive hotels, somewhat apart from local life, which is either relaxing or generic depending on taste. Its real charm is beyond the resorts, in the villages, market and heritage. It is a gentle, easygoing island rather than a place of dramatic sights.
