The Island of Djerba

Djerba, a sun-drenched island off the south coast of Tunisia linked to the mainland by an ancient Roman causeway, is the country's main beach-holiday destination, but with a gentle character all its own. It is primarily a package beach-resort destination, so the coast is developed with all-inclusive hotels, somewhat apart from local life, which is either relaxing or generic depending on taste. Its real charm is beyond the resorts, in the villages, market and heritage. It is a gentle, easygoing island rather than a place of dramatic sights.
