Ten minutes from Teotihuacan's pyramids stands the other half of the story: the Ex-Convento de San Agustin Acolman, begun in 1539 as one of the great fortress monasteries from which Augustinian friars evangelized the valley. Its facade is the textbook example of Mexican plateresque - Isabelline stonework carved like silverwork, with candelabra columns, garlands and saints framing the door, long regarded as the finest of its kind in Mexico. Behind the battlemented front, two storeys of cloisters carry rare sixteenth-century frescoes in black and red - friars, passion scenes and grotesques painted by indigenous artists learning European engraving styles - and the open chapel from which mass was said to crowds in the atrium. Acolman also claims the piñata: friars here are credited with adapting the seven-pointed star as catechism theater in the 1580s, and the town throws a piñata fair each December. Quiet, scarcely visited and profound, it is the ideal decompression after the pyramids' crowds.
What you actually see
- The plateresque facade - Mexico's finest carved 16th-century front.
- The frescoed cloisters - black-and-red murals by indigenous painters.
- The open chapel and atrium cross - carved with obsidian-eyed symbols.
- The piñata legacy - the tradition's claimed birthplace.
When to go
Pair with a Teotihuacan morning year-round; December adds the piñata fair. The stone glows warmest in late afternoon.
Honest expectations
An hour suffices - it is one building, deeply rewarding but compact. Flood damage over the centuries left the lower walls scarred; parts of the cloister rotate closed for conservation. Labeling is minimal, in Spanish.
Nearby
Teotihuacan's pyramids ten minutes west; the Reyes Acozac pulque country and Texcoco lie within half an hour.
