Bacalar's little star fort earns its plaza-top perch with three centuries of hard history. The Spanish built San Felipe between 1725 and 1733 after generations of pirate raids up the lagoon - English, French and Dutch freebooters used the Rio Hondo and coastal channels to sack the town and haul off dyewood, the logwood whose extraction shaped this frontier. The fort's four bastions, dry moat and cannon-studded ramparts did their work until a different war overwhelmed them: in the Caste War of the mid-nineteenth century, Maya forces took Bacalar and held the region for decades, and the fort changed hands with the fortunes of that long conflict. Restored, it now houses the Museo del Fuerte de Bacalar, reopened in 1983, whose compact rooms cover piracy, the dyewood trade and the Caste War with maps, weapons and dioramas. The ramparts remain the visit's crown - cannons aimed over papaya trees at the impossible turquoise of the lagoon, the view that explains why everyone from pirates to weekenders wanted Bacalar.
