Muyil
A jungle pyramid at Sian Ka'an's edge with a float-through finale - Maya ruins, a boardwalk to the lagoon and a drift down ancient trading canals.

Muyil - ancient Chunyaxche - worked the border between forest and water: a Maya trading town on the freshwater lagoons behind Sian Ka'an's coastal reef, moving jade, honey and salt by canoe along canals its engineers cut through the mangrove. The site keeps its best building in unusually elegant condition - El Castillo, a 17-metre pyramid with a unique solid rounded turret at its crown, rising from genuinely deep jungle where motmots call and the crowds of Tulum never arrive. From the ruins, a boardwalk trail crosses the forest to a canopy-view tower and the shore of Muyil lagoon, where lanchas run the classic extension: across the first lagoon, through a hidden canal to the second, and then the float - drifting the ancient trading canal itself, life-vest as diaper-seat, carried by gentle current between walls of mangrove and sawgrass under open sky for half an hour of the Yucatan's most serene motion. Ruins alone take an hour; with the float, Muyil becomes the area's quietly perfect half-day.
What you actually see
- El Castillo - the turret-topped pyramid in deep forest.
- The boardwalk - jungle trail and lookout tower to the lagoon.
- The lagoon crossing - lancha passages of glass-green water.
- The canal float - drifting the Maya trade route itself.
When to go
Dry-season mornings for birds and cool forest; the float runs midday-friendly year-round. Book boats at the lagoon dock; no need for advance tours.
Honest expectations
Fees stack - site, boardwalk and boat are separate - and the float is not cheap, though it earns its price. Mosquitoes command the forest sections; repellent applied before entry. Sun on the lagoon crossing is total.
Nearby
Sian Ka'an's biosphere spreads seaward; Tulum's ruins and cenote belt lie twenty-five minutes north.
