Cenote Angelita

Angelita - "little angel" - is a single flooded shaft in the jungle south of Tulum, and from the surface it is merely a pretty green pool. Thirty metres down, it becomes one of the most photographed dives on earth. There, a dense layer of hydrogen sulfide - produced by decaying leaf-fall trapped at the halocline where fresh water floats on salt - spreads across the shaft as an opaque white cloud, and the effect defeats the brain's categories: it reads as a river in fog, complete with misty banks, flowing around an island mound where bare drowned trees rise through the "surface" like a winter forest. Divers descend through clear fresh water, hover over the cloudscape, then drop through the sulfurous murk - a few dark, egg-scented metres - into the salt layer below, where the shaft continues toward 60 metres. It is an advanced dive by every measure: depth, no natural light below the cloud, and the disorientation of the layer itself, guided in small groups by Tulum's technical operations. Photographs made here look composited; they are not.

When to go

Year-round - conditions below are constant; morning dives get the calmest surface and best ambient light on the cloud. Book with technical-minded Tulum operators.

Practical notes

This is for certified deep divers with recent experience - there is no snorkel version, and the swimming-hole crowd should choose elsewhere. The sulfur layer smells and stains nothing but memory. Depth discipline is the whole game.
