Coba

Coba was one of the giants: a Classic-era metropolis of perhaps 50,000 people spread between five lakes, wired to its region by the greatest network of sacbeob - raised white causeways - in the Maya world, including a dead-straight hundred-kilometre road to Yaxuna near Chichen Itza. The modern visit keeps the city's scale honest by keeping its distances: monuments cluster in groups separated by kilometres of shaded forest track, and the classic method is two wheels - rental bicycles and pedal-taxi "Maya limos" streaming along the ancient roadbeds under the canopy. The circuit collects a stately church-pyramid group by the lake, two ballcourts, carved stelae under thatch recording queens and calendar dates, and the finale of Nohoch Mul - at 42 metres among the tallest pyramids of the northern Maya lowlands, its stair rising out of the trees. Summit climbing reopened in December 2025 on a new wooden staircase fitted over the worn original steps, after roughly six years closed. Crocodiles patrol the lake edges, toucans cross the paths, and the forest keeps the crowds diluted.

When to go

Early morning, dry season, for cool riding and monkeys still active; the site opens ahead of the tour waves from Tulum. Afternoons swelter on the tracks.

Honest expectations

Distances are real - walking the full circuit doubles the time; rent wheels. Pyramid climbing reopened in December 2025 on a new staircase; access rules can change, so check at the gate. Facilities cluster at the gate only.
