Hoyo Azul is a pool at the base of a limestone cliff some seventy five metres high in Cap Cana, fed by water filtering through the rock, and the mineral content and the depth give it a blue that reads as artificial in photographs and is not. A short walk through forest reaches it. It sits inside a commercial adventure park, so access means paying for the park, and the pool is often busy with groups.

What you actually see

  • The blue pool - water coloured by mineral content and depth at the cliff base.
  • The limestone cliff - the wall of around seventy five metres above the pool.
  • The forest walk - the short path in through woodland from the park.
  • The spring feed - water filtering through the rock rather than a stream.

When to go

Year round; mornings are quieter before the resort groups arrive. Midday light shows the colour best. The park keeps daytime hours.

Honest expectations

Access requires paying for the whole adventure park, which is not cheap. Swimming is restricted to a roped area and life jackets are mandatory. It gets crowded with groups from late morning.

Nearby

Juanillo Beach is nearby, and Ojos Indígenas is north.
