Oxman is the cenote that swings. On the grounds of the old henequen hacienda of San Lorenzo Oxman outside Valladolid, a vertical shaft drops through the limestone to open water some twenty metres below the surface world - a classic open cenote where the roots of the alamo trees at the rim pour all the way down the walls in curtains to drink, framing the pool in vegetal chandeliers. A spiral stair descends to a wooden platform, and the house specialty launches from it: a rope swing that pendulums swimmers out over the deep blue-green water for the drop - the cenote's rite of passage lap after lap. Black catfish patrol the depths, swallows and the occasional motmot cross the light shaft, and shafts of afternoon sun stripe the falling roots. Up top, the hacienda keeps a swimming pool, lawns and a restaurant of Yucatecan standards - cochinita, panuchos, cold coconuts - which the combo tickets fold into the visit. Less staged than Suytun, less crowded than the Dzitnup pair, Oxman keeps the balance of scenery and play.
What you actually see
- The root curtains - alamo roots pouring down the shaft walls.
- The rope swing - the pendulum drop into deep water.
- The blue shaft - open sky, swallows and striped light.
- The hacienda - pool, lawns and Yucatecan lunch above.
When to go
Late morning through mid-afternoon for sun reaching the water; weekdays for swing queues measured in people, not minutes. The dry season keeps the stair and platforms grippy.
Honest expectations
Life jackets are enforced for most swimmers and the swing has monitored rules - it is exuberant, not extreme. Tour groups pulse through midday. Cash and biodegradable-sunscreen rules apply as everywhere in cenote country.
Nearby
Valladolid's center, the Dzitnup cenotes and the convent at Sisal ward are all within fifteen minutes.
