Firefly Sanctuary of Nanacamilpa

For about eight weeks each summer, the old-growth fir and pine forests above Nanacamilpa host a courtship display that has become one of Mexico's most sought natural spectacles. As dusk settles between the trunks, male fireflies of a species found in these highland woods rise and begin flashing in drifting waves - thousands of cold green-gold points pulsing in loose synchrony, turning the forest floor and canopy into slow-motion galaxies. The season runs from roughly mid-June to mid-August, peaking around the July new moons, and viewing is organized: sanctuaries such as Piedra Canteada and neighboring ejido reserves run small guided groups down darkened trails, with strict rules - no white light, no flash, no leaving the path, silence where possible - because the display is, after all, several million insects trying to find each other. Cabins and campsites let visitors stay past the show, when the forest settles into ordinary starlight.

When to go

Mid-June to mid-August only, with the best displays on warm, humid, moonless nights an hour after sunset; rain earlier in the day often improves the show. Book peak-season weekends well ahead.

Honest expectations

Photography rarely captures it and flash is banned - come to watch, not shoot. Cold, mud and a kilometre or two of dark walking are part of the deal. Cloudbursts can cancel walks with no notice.
