On the high rim between Salazie's chasm and the Plaine-des-Palmistes, Reunion keeps its primeval self: the Belouve and Bebour forests, where endemic highland tamarin trees twist under moss sleeves, tree ferns stand in cathedral groves, and orchids colonise every fork - one of the Mascarenes' most intact cloud forests, threaded by boardwalks and trails from easy loops to the Trou de Fer lookout track. Mist is co-author here, drifting through on its own schedule and turning the woods to silver-green theatre; the Belouve gite at the forest's edge overlooks the whole Salazie cirque when the curtain lifts.

What you actually see

  • The tamarin groves - twisted endemics in their moss sleeves.
  • The tree-fern cathedrals - Bebour's giant fern understorey.
  • The cirque overlook - Salazie from the Belouve rim.
  • The mist theatre - cloud drifting the boardwalk trails.

When to go

May to November for the driest boards - relative terms in a cloud forest; mornings give the clearest cirque views and the best mist-and-sun lighting. Rain makes it lush, muddy and arguably better.

Honest expectations

Mud is the forest's default - proper shoes or surrendered ones; boardwalks are slick where mossed. The access road is narrow with scheduled one-way hours historically - check current rules at Plaine-des-Palmistes. Cloud can blank the famous views while improving the forest's mood: count both as wins.

Nearby

The Trou de Fer lookout, Hell-Bourg below the rim and the Plaine's volcano road.
