Val Quirico

Val Quirico is Mexico's most cheerful architectural fiction: a Tuscan-style village raised in the 2010s on the lands of the old Hacienda Santa Agueda, its developers importing the stone-lane, tower-and-piazza vocabulary of the Val d'Orcia to the Tlaxcala plain. The result is neither theme park nor town exactly - people do live above the shops - but a strolling set-piece of vine-hung facades, wooden balconies, fountain squares and bell towers, filled with trattorias, wine bars, gelato counters, artisan shops and weekend crowds from Puebla dressed for the photographs they came to take. Children ride ponies and pedal-carts through the lanes, mimes and musicians work the plazas, and hot-air balloon rides lift off the fields at dawn. It is unapologetically manufactured and completely pleasant on its own terms - a Mexican answer to the question of what to do with a Sunday, with La Malinche's volcano profile floating beyond the terracotta roofs.

It is a commercial development playing a village - authenticity hunters should calibrate. Weekend parking and restaurant waits are real. Prices run resort-level by regional standards.
