Cuexcomate

Puebla's favorite geological joke sits in a suburban plaza: the Cuexcomate, billed with civic affection as the smallest volcano in the world. Geologists spoil the title gently - it is not a true volcano but an extinct geyser cone, built up by mineral-laden hot water most likely during a 1064 eruption episode of Popocatepetl - but the thing itself remains delightfully strange: a squat truncated cone about 13 metres tall and 23 wide, its calcified walls hollow as a chimney. The name means "clay pot" or granary in Nahuatl, which is exactly what it resembles. A metal spiral staircase descends through the crater mouth into the damp, echoing interior, where lights pick out the mineral walls and a small platform lets visitors stand inside a formation most people never knew existed. Local lore once made it a dumping place for secrets and worse; today it anchors a tidy little park where neighborhood life goes on around the republic's most modest "volcano."

When to go

Any time - it takes half an hour and shrugs at weather. Combine it with the centro or the Cholula road rather than making a dedicated trip.

It is a charming footnote, not a headline - manage expectations to curiosity scale. The stair is steep and the interior humid. Opening hours are municipal and modest.
