Puebla answered the question of how a baroque capital should honor the style: hire Pritzker laureate Toyo Ito and let him pour the baroque in white concrete. Opened in 2016 on the Angelopolis edge of the city, the International Museum of the Baroque is a swirl of curving fifteen-metre walls that never quite meet at right angles, wrapped around a courtyard pool whose vortex nods to the style's obsession with movement and light. The galleries inside treat the baroque as a world phenomenon - theater, music, urbanism, science and painting from Europe to Asia and New Spain - through immersive staging, models, projections and loaned works, with Puebla's own Talavera, gilded retablos and convent culture as the local anchor. Blockbuster loans have ranged across European masters, and the permanent halls read as an essay: the baroque as the first global style, with Mexico among its capitals. Architecture pilgrims come for Ito's building alone, best circled at dusk when the concrete glows.
