Amparo Museum

The Amparo is the standard other private museums in Mexico measure against. Endowed by banker Manuel Espinosa Yglesias in memory of his wife Amparo and opened in 1991, it occupies two joined colonial buildings - a 1600s hospital among them - renovated with glass and steel confidence. Its pre-Hispanic floor is among the finest anywhere: Olmec masks, Zapotec urns, Maya stelae and exquisite West Mexico figures displayed in dark, focused galleries that treat each piece as sculpture first and specimen second, with interpretation that respects the visitor's intelligence. Viceregal rooms - the mansion's own gilded chapel and salons of New Spanish painting and furniture - carry the story forward, and ambitious contemporary exhibitions keep the program current. The finale is architectural: the rooftop cafe terrace, glassed against the weather, aligns Puebla's tiled domes and the cathedral's towers with the volcanoes beyond - the city's best free-with-ticket view, ideal at golden hour.

Closed Tuesdays, not Mondays - Puebla's exception trips visitors. The collection is deep but the building compact; two focused hours suffice. Spanish-first labels with good English summaries.
