Amparo Museum

Endowed by banker Manuel Espinosa Yglesias in memory of his wife Amparo and opened in 1991, it occupies two joined colonial buildings - a 1600s hospital among them - renovated with glass and steel. Its pre-Hispanic floor is one of the strongest in Mexico: Olmec masks, Zapotec urns, Maya stelae and exquisite West Mexico figures displayed in dark, focused galleries that treat each piece as sculpture first and specimen second, with interpretation that respects the visitor's intelligence. Viceregal rooms - the mansion's own gilded chapel and salons of New Spanish painting and furniture - carry the story forward, and ambitious contemporary exhibitions keep the program current. The finale is architectural: the rooftop cafe terrace, glassed against the weather, aligns Puebla's tiled domes and the cathedral's towers with the volcanoes beyond - the city's best free-with-ticket view, ideal at golden hour.
