Africam Safari began in 1972 when Carlos Camacho Espiritu, a Puebla broadcaster and pilot, opened his private African-animal ranch on Valsequillo lake to the public - and it has matured into one of Latin America's most respected conservation parks. The format remains the founder's: visitors drive the safari circuit in their own cars or park buses, windows-up in the predator zones, while some 350 species range in large mixed enclosures built to read as savanna - giraffes browsing at eye level, white rhinos dusting themselves beside the road, zebra and antelope herds mingling, lions surveying it all from their kopjes. A walking section adds kangaroos, butterflies, a nocturnal house and Mexico's own endangered fauna, reflecting the park's serious breeding work - it has reared axolotls, golden eagles and other national priorities alongside its African stock. Night safaris, keeper-for-a-day programs and lakeside zip lines extend the repertoire. For families based in Puebla or the capital, it is the region's best animal day by a distance.
What you actually see
- The drive-through savanna - giraffes, rhinos and herds beside the car.
- The lion zone - windows-up viewing from the road.
- The walking section - Mexican endangered species and the butterfly house.
- Valsequillo lake - the reserve's water frame.
When to go
Dry-season mornings find animals active and roads dust-free; summer visits work best early before rain and siesta hours. Weekdays halve the vehicle queues.
Honest expectations
Animal sightings follow animal moods - drive slowly and the circuit rewards patience. Weekend convoys can crawl at the star enclosures. Food inside is functional; many families picnic in designated areas.
Nearby
Puebla's centro and the Cholula pyramids are each about half an hour; the Valsequillo reservoir's shores frame the return.
