Puerto Morelos
The leaning lighthouse town between Cancun and Playa - a fishing village square, a reef national park just offshore and a jungle cenote route inland.

Puerto Morelos kept the shape the Riviera lost: a real fishing village around a real plaza, one block from a working beach where lanchas outnumber loungers. Its mascot leans photogenically - the old lighthouse, tilted by Hurricane Beulah in 1967 and left standing beside its upright replacement as the town's emblem. Offshore, close enough to swim toward, runs the reason the town has rules: the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park protects a healthy stretch of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef beginning a few hundred metres out, and the fishermen's cooperatives run the snorkeling with propriety - fixed prices from the plaza kiosks, guides in the water, moorings instead of anchors, and turtles, rays and grunts in commuting quantities. Inland, the Ruta de los Cenotes strings jungle swimming holes and zip-line parks down the Leona Vicario road. The town itself does slow evenings well: fish tacos and ceviche on the square, a celebrated English-language bookstore, and sargassum-dependent beach days under the palms.
What you actually see
- The leaning lighthouse - the hurricane-tilted icon on the beach.
- The reef park - cooperative-run snorkeling on protected coral.
- The plaza - village evenings a block from the sand.
- The cenote route - jungle pools strung along the inland road.
When to go
December to April for dry days and clearest water; check sargassum forecasts in summer. Mornings give the reef its calmest visibility.
Honest expectations
The beach is village-simple, and seaweed season is real - the reef and plaza carry the visit when the sand is dressed in brown. Snorkeling requires the guides; freelance swimming to the reef is prohibited. Development is creeping; the village core still wins.
Nearby
Cancun's airport is twenty minutes - making this the softest landing on the coast; Playa del Carmen lies equally close the other way.
