Museo Maya de Cancun

Cancun's best rainy-day hour stands on concrete stilts above the mangrove at km 16.5: the Museo Maya, opened in 2012 as the region's most important archaeological museum since the great hurricane closed its predecessor. Elevated galleries - lifted against storms, reached by a sculptural ramp - hold about 350 pieces at a time from a collection of thousands: the skeleton of the Woman of the Palms among the peninsula's oldest human remains, architectural facades and carved lintels, jade masks and burial offerings, and cases walking Quintana Roo's own sites - Tulum, Coba, Dzibanche - alongside masterworks loaned across the Maya world. Below, the ticket keeps working: garden paths descend into the San Miguelito ruins, a genuine Postclassic settlement of house platforms and small temples threaded through the coastal forest that the hotel zone paved everywhere else - iguanas basking on thousand-year-old stairs a frisbee's throw from the boulevard. Air-conditioned, uncrowded and honestly curated, it gives Cancun's beach mile the historical footing visitors rarely suspect it has.
