Kuala Gula sits inside the Matang mangrove reserve, one of the best managed mangrove systems anywhere, and the combination of intertidal mudflat and standing forest makes it the most important shorebird site on the west coast of the peninsula. Between about September and March the flats fill with migrants on the East Asian-Australasian flyway - godwits, plovers, sandpipers, whimbrels, the occasional Nordmann's greenshank - in numbers that run into tens of thousands at peak, and the mangrove holds herons, egrets and kingfishers year-round. The milky stork, close to extinction in Malaysia, is the subject of a release programme run from here. Viewing is done from a boat through the channels or from the mudflat edge at the right tide, and both need local knowledge, so a guide from the village is the way it works.

What you actually see

  • Migratory waders in numbers - tens of thousands on the flats at peak.
  • Matang mangrove - a large, well managed forest reserve around the channels.
  • Milky storks - the release programme for a species nearly gone from the country.
  • Boat viewing - through the mangrove channels at the right state of tide.

When to go

September to March for migrants; timed to the tide. A day.

Honest expectations

Bird numbers depend entirely on tide and season - the flats can be empty at the wrong hour. A local boatman is effectively required. Mosquitoes and sandflies are severe. Facilities are minimal.

Nearby

Taiping and Bukit Larut are inland; Pulau Kelumpang is offshore.
