Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

The National Elephant Conservation Centre at Kuala Gandah exists because of a specific problem: as plantations replaced forest, wild Asian elephants ended up in fragments too small to feed them, raiding crops and coming into conflict with people. Since 1974 a translocation unit based here has captured such elephants and moved them to larger protected forests - several hundred animals, one of the longer-running operations of its kind. The centre holds the elephants that cannot be released, mostly orphans and animals injured or habituated beyond return, and runs an education programme. It changed its visitor offering substantially after criticism: bathing with and riding the elephants, which used to be the draw, have been stopped, and visits are now viewing, feeding and a talk. Bookings are required and numbers are limited. It is government-run and free, with donations taken.

Before you go

Booking is required and slots fill. There is no riding or bathing and there should not be. It is a captive facility for animals that cannot go back, not a sanctuary in the rewilding sense - the centre is clear about that.
