Governor Gore Bird Sanctuary
A small National Trust sanctuary around a pond on the Frank Sound road.

The Governor Gore sanctuary is a small National Trust holding on the Frank Sound road, a pond with woodland around it kept as habitat for the island's waterbirds. Whistling ducks, herons, gallinules and migrating waders use the water depending on the season. It is a roadside stop rather than a destination, and quiet enough that patience is generally rewarded. There is space to pull off the road and a short track leads in to the water's edge.

When to go
December to April is the dry high season and the migration window. Early morning and late afternoon are best for birds. Water levels change with the rains.

It is very small and there is no hide or boardwalk. Birds are often distant or absent. Mosquitoes around the pond can be severe.
