Titelberg

The Titelberg plateau in the far southwest carried one of the more important Celtic oppida of the region, the centre of the Treveri people from around the second century BC, with a rampart cutting off the promontory and a settlement of some size behind it that minted its own coinage. It continued under Roman rule before being abandoned. Excavation has recovered a great deal; on the ground the rampart line and the plateau are what is visible.

History

Around 100 BC the Treveri, one of the Celtic tribes, entered a period of prosperity and built several oppida near the Moselle valley, of which Titelberg was by far the largest (Wikipedia, Titelberg).

• The plateau - the settlement platform above the surrounding valleys.
• The Treveri connection - the people whose centre this was before Roman rule.
• The quarried edges - the ore workings that cut into the plateau in modern times.

When to go

April to October is the most comfortable. Grass hides the earthworks in summer. Mornings are quietest.

Before you go

Almost nothing is visible above ground beyond the rampart line; the site rewards knowing what happened here rather than looking at it. There is no interpretation on the plateau. Modern quarrying has removed parts of the site.
