Belval Blast Furnaces
Two preserved blast furnaces standing in a redeveloped steelworks site, one climbed for the view.

The Belval steelworks closed in 1997 and the site was redeveloped as a university campus, research centre and residential quarter, but two of the blast furnaces were kept standing in the middle of it. Furnace A can be climbed on a stair and walkway to a platform about forty metres up, looking over the site and the surrounding Minett country, with the plant and pipework left in place around it. The contrast with the new building is the point.

When to go
April to October is best for the climb; opening is seasonal and limited in winter. The site itself is open year round. The climb closes in high wind.
Things to know
The furnace climb has restricted opening and should be checked before travelling. The surrounding redevelopment is corporate and not attractive to everyone. The climb involves many steps and open metal walkways.
