Esch-sur-Alzette

Esch-sur-Alzette is the second city of Luxembourg and it grew on iron: the Minett ore field under this corner of the country turned a village of a few hundred into an industrial town within decades from the 1870s, and the money built a centre of art nouveau and art deco frontages along the main streets. The steelworks at Belval next door closed and the site has been redeveloped around the surviving blast furnaces.

Background

Esch is the second-most populous commune in Luxembourg, with 37,922 inhabitants in 2025. It lies in the Alzette valley on the border with France, and the capital, Luxembourg City, lies roughly 15 kilometres north-east. The full name sets it apart from Esch-sur-Sûre, 45 kilometres further north. The earliest written mention of the town is dated 12 April 1128, in a message addressed to Pope Honorius II. In the 1850s large deposits of iron ore came to light nearby, and the steel and iron company ARBED was founded in 1911. Mining and steelmaking drew workers from across Europe. The mines and many blast furnaces closed in the 1970s, and the last furnace, at Esch-Belval, stopped in 1997.

The city is workaday and its interest is industrial rather than picturesque. Parts of the centre are run down. The redevelopment at Belval is corporate and university building rather than heritage.
