Esch-sur-Alzette is the second city of Luxembourg and it grew on iron: the Minett ore field under this corner of the country turned a village of a few hundred into an industrial town within decades from the 1870s, and the money built a centre of art nouveau and art deco frontages along the main streets. The steelworks at Belval next door closed and the site has been redeveloped around the surviving blast furnaces.

The city is workaday and its interest is industrial rather than picturesque. Parts of the centre are run down. The redevelopment at Belval is corporate and university building rather than heritage.
