Getting thereAt Zapyškis, about 20 km west of Kaunas on the Nemunas
EntryFree; interior access irregular

The church of St John the Baptist at Zapyškis was built in the first half of the sixteenth century, a small brick Gothic building with stepped gables and buttresses, and it is one of the few genuinely Gothic churches surviving in Lithuania. It stands alone on the flat bank of the Nemunas outside the village, which is why it looks the way it does in photographs: no churchyard wall, no trees, just the brick building on grass with the river behind. Repeated flooding raised the ground around it and eventually made it unusable as a parish church, and it has stood empty for long periods, used now for concerts and occasional services. Restoration has stabilised the fabric. The setting is the whole of the effect.

What you actually see

  • The Gothic brickwork - stepped gables and buttresses of the 1500s.
  • The isolated setting - the church alone on the open floodplain.
  • The Nemunas behind - the river running past the building.
  • Flood evidence - the raised ground level around the walls.

When to go

May to September for the surroundings and for concerts; the interior is opened irregularly, so seeing inside depends on timing or arrangement. Spring floods can surround the building, which is striking but limits access.

Honest expectations

The interior is usually locked and largely bare when open. There is no interpretation on site. Facilities are none. It is a photogenic twenty-minute stop rather than a substantial visit.

Nearby

Raudondvaris lies east; Kaunas is beyond it.
