M. K. Ciurlionis Art Museum

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was both a composer and a painter, and he worked at the two together: several of his picture cycles are built like music, with recurring motifs across a sequence of canvases and titles borrowed from musical forms, sonatas, fugues and preludes. He died in 1911 at thirty-five, having produced some three hundred paintings and a body of music in barely a decade, and the country has held him as its central artistic figure ever since. This Kaunas museum, opened in 1921 to house the collection his family and admirers gathered, holds the great majority of his surviving work, and shows it alongside Lithuanian folk art, applied arts and rotating exhibitions. Seeing the cycles hung in order, rather than reproduced singly, is what the visit is for.
