The National Gallery of Jamaica

Founded in 1974 and housed on the downtown waterfront, this is the oldest and largest public art gallery in the English-speaking Caribbean, and its collection tells the story of how Jamaica came to look at itself. Edna Manley's sculpture, particularly the carved wood of the 1930s, anchors the modern galleries; around her are the self-taught artists the gallery calls intuitives, including John Dunkley, whose dark, dense paintings of Jamaican roads are among the most striking things in Caribbean art, and Mallica Reynolds, known as Kapo, a revivalist bishop and sculptor. Taíno material and colonial-era painting fill the earlier rooms. Contemporary work occupies the upper floors.

When to go

Year-round; closed Mondays. Last Sunday of the month is free with live music and is the liveliest time to go. Weekday mornings are quiet. Allow two hours minimum for the permanent collection.

What to expect

It is downtown, which means arriving by car or taxi rather than walking from uptown hotels. The building is a converted office block and the spaces are functional rather than beautiful. Funding is limited and parts of the collection rotate off view. Labels are informative but sparse.
