Emancipation Park

Emancipation Park opened in 2002 on a block in New Kingston, laid out with a jogging track, gardens and a fountain, and it is used hard: joggers from dawn, office workers at lunch, concerts and events in the evening. At the main entrance stands Redemption Song, Laura Facey's bronze of a man and a woman rising naked from a pool, gazing upward. The nudity caused a public row when it was unveiled and the argument about it has never entirely ended.

When to go

Year round; the park opens from early morning to late evening. Early morning and evening are when it is busiest and coolest. Concerts and events fill it on some weekends.

What to expect

It is a city park rather than a sight, and half an hour covers it. The sculpture divides opinion sharply and some visitors find it uncomfortable. Parking around New Kingston is difficult.
