Fuglsang Art Museum
A pale brick gallery by Tony Fretton in the Lolland fields, holding Danish art from 1780 onward.

Fuglsang was a manor whose owners were patrons of Danish artists and composers around 1900, hosting Carl Nielsen among others, and the collection that grew from that association is now housed in a museum opened in 2008 beside the old manor, designed by the British architect Tony Fretton in pale grey brick, a plain rectangular block with tall windows framing the flat Lolland farmland outside. The collection covers Danish art from about 1780 to the present, with strong holdings of the Golden Age, the Funen painters, and artists connected with Lolland-Falster, hung in daylit rooms. The building has been widely praised for the way it handles light and for the deliberate restraint of putting a plain box in an agricultural landscape.
History
The British architect Tony Fretton won the competition for the museum building in May 2005, construction began in August 2006, and the museum, part of the Fuglsang Cultural Centre on Lolland, was inaugurated in January 2008. Noted for the way it fits into the surrounding buildings and landscape, it won a RIBA European Award in 2009 and was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize the same year; the collection concentrates on Danish art, with an emphasis on local artists and motifs (Wikipedia, Fuglsang Art Museum).

When to go
Year round. Two hours. Closed Mondays. Daylight matters, so a bright day shows the galleries as designed. Concerts are held in the manor, continuing its musical tradition.
What to expect
It is remote and hard to reach without a car. The collection is regional and largely Danish, so foreign visitors may not recognise much. It is small and two hours covers it fully. The cafe has limited hours.
