Pazaislis Monastery

Pazaislis is a serene Italian baroque monastery set on a wooded peninsula above the Kaunas reservoir, its pink-and-white church and cloisters built by Camaldolese monks with imported Italian craftsmen. It is the finest baroque ensemble in the country and, in summer, the setting for a well-loved classical music festival.

Background

Together with the Church of the Visitation, Pažaislis forms the largest monastery complex in Lithuania, and no Baroque church in the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania has more marble decoration. Krzysztof Zygmunt Pac founded it in 1664 as a Camaldolese hermitage on a hill known in Latin as Mons Pacis. The main building work lasted until 1674 and resumed in 1712, and writers of the time said it cost 8 barrels of gold coins. Michał Jan Pac funded the towers and dome in 1755. Its treasures include a Mass cup set with over 1000 gemstones. The summer music festival, begun in 1996, offers about 30 concerts, and in 2021 the complex was named best European film location of 2020.

Central Kaunas and its modernist streets are twenty minutes west; the reservoir shore is good for a walk.
