The National Gallery Prague

The National Gallery is not one place but a set of buildings, and the split is the first thing to understand. The Trade Fair Palace in Holesovice, a functionalist block from the late 1920s, holds nineteenth to twenty-first century art around a tall white atrium, including a French collection with Impressionist and early modern canvases that surprises people who did not expect them here. The Convent of St Agnes shows medieval Bohemian panel painting and carved saints in the Gothic rooms they were made for. Older European painting and sculpture sit in the palaces up on Hradcany. When to go

Year round, and a good indoor plan for the grey months. Weekday afternoons are quietest; the Trade Fair Palace fills on weekends. Concessions and occasional free-entry days exist but the policy has changed over the years, so check before you count on it. Allow one building per visit rather than trying to see everything in a day.

Honest expectations

The collection is scattered and the arrangement keeps changing, so a plan made from an older guidebook can send you to the wrong door. The Trade Fair Palace is enormous and tiring, with long stretches of narrow rooms and uneven lighting. Wings close for rehanging. The combined ticket only pays off if you are genuinely visiting three buildings.
