Ghadames

Ghadames, a remote oasis on the edge of the Sahara where Libya meets Algeria and Tunisia, is one of the oldest and most enchanting desert towns in the world, long known as the Pearl of the Desert and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its remarkable old town is a masterpiece of desert living, a dense maze of whitewashed mud-brick houses whose upper floors and covered, shaded passageways keep the fierce heat at bay, brightened within by vivid painted rooms. Palm gardens and springs nurture the oasis, and the traditional architecture, cleverly separating covered lanes for men and open rooftop terraces for women, reflects a distinctive way of life perfectly adapted to the Sahara.

History

Archaeological evidence suggests the oasis has been settled since the 4th millennium BC, and the first written records come from Roman times, when it was Cydamus, a name believed to derive from the Berber tribe of the Tidamensi: the proconsul Lucius Cornelius Balbus invaded it under Augustus, a permanent garrison was set up under Septimius Severus, who may have visited around 202, and the Romans withdrew a few decades later. Byzantine missionaries converted the people to Christianity, and a bishop lived here in the 6th century; Muslim Arabs took the oasis in the late 7th century, and it served as a base of the trans-Saharan trade until the 19th century. It came under Italian rule in 1911 and under French administration from 1943 until Libyan independence in 1951. In the 1970s new houses were built outside the old town, which emptied through the 1990s; it became a World Heritage Site in 1986 and was on the danger list from 2016 to 2025 (Wikipedia, Ghadames).

Ghadames is genuinely remote, deep in the Sahara near the borders, so reaching it takes effort, and much of the old town's population moved to modern housing nearby, leaving the historic core quieter. As one of the oldest and most beautiful desert towns on earth, a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of shaded white lanes and palm gardens, though, Ghadames is utterly enchanting.
