Ghat

Ghat has staged Saharan departures for a millennium: the Tuareg town at the Acacus mountains' feet grew on the caravan axis toward the Niger bend, and its old medina - mudbrick lanes, covered passages, the hilltop fort watching over the palm gardens - keeps the trans-Saharan centuries in walkable form. Today it is the expedition threshold: guides, permits and provisioning gather here before the Acacus and beyond, the annual Tuareg festival (when held) fills the town with race camels and indigo, and the sunset from the fort hill lays the whole geography out - palms, dunes, painted mountains - like a mission briefing.

History

Ghat was an important terminal of a trans-Saharan trade route, a major administrative centre of the Fezzan and a stronghold of the Kel Ajjer Tuareg. From the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD the Fezzan was home to the Garamantian state that worked the trade routes between the Carthaginians, and later Rome, and the Sahel (Wikipedia, Ghat, Libya).
