Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Causeway

The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad causeway crosses Kuwait Bay from Shuwaikh to Subiya, a bridge and causeway of around thirty six kilometres opened in 2019 that cut the journey to the northern shore from over an hour to around twenty minutes. Two artificial islands sit along it. It is among the longest sea crossings of its kind anywhere and the drive itself is the experience. It was built as part of a plan to develop the northern shore, which has advanced more slowly than the bridge itself.

When to go

November to March is the comfortable season. The crossing is open year round. Fog on the bay closes it occasionally in winter.

Things to know

There is nowhere to stop along most of the crossing, so it is experienced from a moving car. The islands were not fully developed as planned. Fog closes it at times.
